About Sarah and her Career
Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on 14th April 1977, the daughter of nursery school teacher Rosellen and garment worker Arthur. At the age of 4, she was spotted by an agent whilst eating in a local restaurant. It was from here that she began her career in TV commercials for Burger King.
At age 7, her parents divorced and she was estranged from her father, living with her mother for the rest of her time at home. Her first starring role was in the short lived series, Swans Crossing where she played Sydney. The show was cancelled after only a few months but Sarah continued to act. She attended Fiorello La Guardia High School (the school which inspired the very successful TV series, Fame) but was kicked out after only a month.
In 1993, however she was cast in All My Children as Kendall Hart, the daughter of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci). In 1995, at just 18 she was awarded with a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress. It was on the set of All My Children that she first met Michelle Trachtenberg, who would later play Dawn in Buffy.
After leaving All My Children, Sarah screen tested for the role of Cordelia for Buffy The Vampire Slayer, before finally landing the role of the lead Buffy Summers. The show was well received by critics and Sarah became a cult icon all over the world. Whilst acting in Buffy, Sarah starred in many movies including, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2 and Simply Irresistible. It was the 1999 box office smash, Cruel Intentions however that showed her versatility as an actress. She won the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss with Selma Blair. During her growing film career however, Sarah decided to leave the show after the seventh season, saying that, "I wanted to go out with a bang, at the top, whilst we were at our best. It felt like the right time." She also stated that, "This isn't about leaving for a career in movies, or in theatre - it's more of a personal decision. I need a rest." Whilst filming the 6th Season of Buffy, Sarah portrayed popular cartoon character Daphne Blake in the movie adaptation of Scooby Doo. A day after filming the last ever episode of Buffy in 2003, she began filming Scooby Doo 2- Monsters Unleashed, reprising her role as Daphne.
After Buffy and in her later career, Sarah acted in several movies including The Grudge, The Grudge 2 and Suburban Girl. As of 2010, her most successful movie is The Grudge which was filmed in 2003 and released in 2004. Since then most of her movies have been unsuccessful e.g Southland Tales, The Air I Breathe and The Return.
She has appeared on several television shows including Grosse Pointe (2001) with her best friend and fellow actress Lindsay Sloane, Sex and The City (2002), The Simpson's (2004), Robot Chicken (2005) and American Dad (2010)
She has appeared on the cover of several magazines like, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Marie Claire, Maxim, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, FHM and People. She has also appeared in FHM's Sexiest Women every year since 1998.
Personal Life
Sarah met her future husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. whilst filming the 1997 horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. They remained friends for several years until they began dating in 2000. During the filming of Scooby Doo, they got engaged shortly after her birthday and married a year later in Mexico on 1st September 2002. The ceremony was officiated by Adam Shankman who had choreographed Once More With Feeling in Season 6. In 2007, Sarah changed her name from Gellar to Prinze as a 5th anniversary present to her husband. However she said that, "My friends and family know me as Prinze, but my professional name and the name everybody knows me by is Gellar."
In April/May 2009, it was confirmed that Sarah was expecting her first child and on September 19th 2009 she welcomed her daughter Charlotte Grace. In an interview with people she said, "Everyday I look at her and I am in awe!"
Sarah rarely talks about her father, who died in October of 2001 from Liver Cancer. In an interview she was asked to say something substantial about him and she replied by saying, "...There's nothing substantial to say. I don't have a father. I would never give him credit or acknowledge him as my father." However, she gives her mother a lot of credit in interviews and thanks her for the life that she provided for her.
