| RUPERT GILES BIO
He was born to an upper-class family in London, England. His family had worked with the Council of Watchers for at least three generations. His father and his Grandmother (Edna) were both Watchers. As a child Giles dreamed of being a "Fighter Pilot" or a "Grocer," but his Watcher Destiny was explained to him by his Father when Giles was ten years old. (Season 1 Epsiode 5)
Giles became a rebellious young adult in 1975, when he dropped out of Oxford University, at age 21, where he was working on a history degree. It was at this time that he began exploring the Dark Arts for fun and/or financial gain, and earned the nickname "Ripper". Giles also befriended a group of his peers (Ethan Rayne, Phillip Henry, Dierdre Page, Thomas Sutcliffe, and Randall). During this time he untruthfully claimed to be a founding member of the band Pink Floyd to impress girls. He also possibly stole cars to go joyriding. And he and his friends summoned the demon Eyghon who killed Randall. After Randall's death they failed to exorcise Eyghon and Giles accepted his destiny as a Watcher in 1980. Before coming to Sunnydale to be Sunnydale High School's Librarian, he worked as Curator at a British museum.
Giles came to Sunnydale at the order of the Watcher's Council. It was here that he met the current Slayer, Buffy Summers and they began training in the library, which becomes the Command Center for the Scooby Gang (Giles, Buffy, Xandr Harris, Willow Rosenberg). He develops romantic feelings for teacher Jenny Calendar, and develops a friendship with the vampire Angel. While Giles and Angel are researching The Master they come across a prophecy in The Pergamum Codex, that foretells Buffy's death while facing The Master. When Buffy learns about the prophecy, she makes the decision to quit being the slayer. This makes Giles realize that he has spent too much time hiding behind his books and he decides to go fight The Master himself. When Buffy finally accepts her destiny as the Slayer, she knocks Giles out cold with a single punch when he tries to stop her.
Giles then becomes overbearing with Buffy's slayer duties, causing Buffy to rebel and she attends a frat party where she and Cordelia are almost sacrificed to the demon Machida. After being lectured by Willow, Giles assists in saving Buffy and decides to stop pushing her so hard. When Ethan Rayne comes to Sunnydale to flee the demon Eyghon, Giles shamefully confesses to Buffy that he was responsible for summoning the demon in his youth, and his horrified when Jenny Calendar becomes possessed by it. Although Eyghon is eventually defeated, Jenny takes time to recover from her ordeal by mantaining distance between herself and Giles. Jenny reveals that she is a member of the Kalderash Clan of gypsies, the clan who cursed Angel with his soul, and that she has been sent to keep a close eye on Angel's relationship with Buffy, to ensure that Angel does not achieve perfect happiness and lose his soul. Giles feels betrayed by Jenny. When Angel loses his soul and murders Jenny, Angelus places Jenny's body in Giles apartment for Giles to find. Angelus also decorates the apartment to set a romantic mood, to confuse and anger Giles. Giles then sets out to avenge Jenny's death by setting fire to Angelus' nest and he tries to dust Angelus. But Buffy stops and saves Giles before he got himself killed. Angelus later kidnaps and tortures Giles to makes Giles reveal the key to awaken Achathla. After the torture fails to make Giles talk, Angelus gets Drusilla to hypnotize Giles into beliving that Drusilla is Jenny. Falling for the illusion Giles reveals the key. Angelus then uses the information that Giles has told him to awaken Achathla. Buffy arrives and rescues Giles, and kills Angel to stop Achathla. Buffy then runs away from Sunnydale.
Giles spends the next several months searching for Buffy, following the smallest clue. He is overjoyed when she eventually returns, but he and Buffy's mother, Joyce Summers, start planning out Buffy's life and overscheduling her, which frusterates Buffy. But Giles and Joyce eventually start going easier on her. Giles serves as slayer Faith Lehane's Watcher for a brief peroid of time. The Scoobies are once again given a frightening glimpse into Giles' past when he, along with every other adult in Sunnydale, are mentally reverted back to their teenage personas by enchanted band candy. While Giles is under the influence of the candy he commits theft, vandlism, and has sex with Joyce. But he helps Buffy save babies from the demon Lurconis. It is also revealed that he is a fan of the 60's band Cream, and thier song "The Tales of Brave Ulssyes" which he plays for Joyce.
Giles discoveres that Buffy has been hiding the return of Angel from Hell from from him and the Scoobies, Giles feels betrayed, since Angel had murdered Jenny and tortured him. Giles does come to Angel's aid when Angel is being mentally/emotionally tortured by The First.
When Buffy's Cruciamentum (a trial on a slayer's 18th birthday, the slayer is unknowingly depowered and forced to battle a Vampire in their weakened state) approaches Giles feels increasingly guilty for betraying Buffy's trut. Even though he described the test as "an archiac exercise in cruelty" Giles secretly injected Buffy with numerous adrenal suppressors and muscle relaxants which weakens her. Giles confesses to his actions when the Vampire (Zachary Kralik) she is supposed to fight escapes. Buffy is disgusted by Giles' betrayal, but forgives him when Giles interferes in her Cruciamentum by dusting her foe's minion Blair, after Buffy destroyed Zachary by tricking him with Holy Water. Because of Giles helping Buffy and having an over emotional-attachment to Buffy (thinking of her as a daughter) which Head Watcher Quentin Travers describes as "Useless to the cause" Giles is fired as a Watcher and replaced by the cowardly andincompetentWesley Wyndham-Pryce, but Giles still serves as Buffy's unofficial Watcher. When Buffy finds herself suddenly endowed with telepathic powers she discoveres that her mother believes that Giles is "like aStevedore in bed" which disgusts Buffy. During the final battle with the demonic Mayor of Sunnydale, Giles pushes the button that kills the Mayor and destroys Sunnydale High, leaving Giles unemployed.
While Giles copes with being newly unemployed, and the growing knowledge that Buffy no longer needs him to be her watcher, he resumes a romantic relationship with an old friend named Olivia. Because he has "no sense of purpose" since he's unemployed he starts lounging around the apartment watching the soap opera Passions with Spike. Giles starts to sink into depression, especially when the Scoobies forget to tell him about Buffy's new boyfriend, Riley Finn and Finn's connection of The Initiative. After a night of drinking Ethan Rayne casts a spell on Giles that turns him into a Fyarl Demon. Giles must go to Spike for help to escape the Initiative and Buffy who believes him to be the demon who killed Giles. Buffy realizes her error when she looks into his eyes and sees an annoyed look on his face. Ethan then reverses the spell, and is taken into custody by the Initiative. Giles takes pleasure in seeing Rayne being manhandled into a car by the soldiers who took him into custody. Later on when the four scoobies cast a spell to become "one body" to defeat the human-demon-android Adam, Giles serves as "the mind."
When Buffy battles Dracula, Giles believes that he is no longer needed in Sunnydale, so he makes plans to return to England. He the only person he tells of his plan is Willow, whom he needed to organize research documents for the Scoobies. But Giles happliy abandons his plan after Buffy comes to Giles after her Dracula encounter, telling him that she wants to know about her Slayer heritage, and she wanted Giles to be her watcher again. When the owner of the magick shoppe (The Magic Box) is killed by Vampires, Giles buys the shop after seeing the store's profits, and he hires Anya as his assistant. Giles is heartbroken when Joyce Summers dies. When Buffy discovers that Dawn is The Key, the only person she tells is Giles. Giles then decides to contact the Watcher's Council to learn more about hell-god Glory. Quentin then attemps to blackmail Buffy, telling her that he will have Giles deported if she does not comply, but Buffy manages to stand up to the council telling them that they will release all the information they have about Glory, and re-instate Giles as her Watcher and give him all his back pay dating back to when he was fired. Travers agrees, and leaves. When the Scoobies search for a way to defeat Glory, Giles brings up the idea of killing Dawn to end Glory's plan. Buffy refuses, and decides to protect Dawn at all costs which angers Giles. Giles admits that he cares about Dawn, but sacrifices must be made. In the final battle against Glory, GilessuffocatesBen Wilkinson with his bare hands, because he knew that Glory could not survive if Ben remained alive, since Ben and Glory shared a body. Buffy could not kill Ben so Giles told Ben that Buffy was a hero and was different than then them. Giles is devastated when Buffy gives up her own life to save Dawn and the world.
Several months after Buffy's death Giles returns to England. On the day he leaves Williow, Anya, Xander, and Tara cast a spell to bring Buffy back from the dead. Even though he is overjoyed to have Buffy back he is very angry at Willow for using such dark magic and calls her "a rank, arrogant, amateur." Even though the other Scoobies believe that Buffy was in a Hell dimension, Giles was unconvinced, and Giles assumption turns out to be correct when Buffy eventually reveals that she was in Heaven. Buffy then begins to rely on Giles too much for financial and emotional support. Eventually Buffy's over reliance of Giles gets to the point where she asks Giles to lecture and punish Dawn, when Dawn sneaks out to hang out with a teenager who tuned out to be a Vampire. Giles then concludes that his presence in Sunnydale is preventing Buffy from assuming responsibility for her own life. Giles then returns to England, and gets his own place near the town of Bath, where he works in alliance with with a powerful local coven. Several months later, Tara is struck and killed by a stray bullet shot by Warren Mears that was meant for Buffy. This drives Willow, who was recovering from a magic addiction, to abuse dark magicks. Williow kills Warren and attempts to kill Warren's associates, Andrew and Jonathan. Hearing about the rise of a dark power in Sunnydale, Giles borrows some magic from the coven and teleports to Sunnydale. When Willow boasts about being invincible, Giles knocks her to the floor with a blast of magical enegry and says "I'd like to test that theory." Giles knows that Willow is much stronger than him, so he tricks her into asorbing his magic, which is the true essence of magic. This leaves Giles near death. Willow can feel all the hurt and sadness in the world and she reasons that the only way to make it go away is to destroy the world. Luckily the good magic Willow drained from Giles, brings out Willow's natural love and compasson, so Xander is able to get to her in time and save her and the world before it's too late.
When Giles returns yet again to England he takes Willow with him to rehabilitate her. Months later Giles returns to Sunnydale with several Potential Slayers to protect them from The First Evil and The Bringers. An injured Watcher witnessed Giles about to be beheaded before he passed out. When the Scoobies learn of this they worry that Giles may in fact be The First. But thier assumptions prove to be incorrect when they tackle Giles to the ground, proving that he is corporeal. Giles tells them that he heard the Bringer coming and decapitated it before it had the chance to kill him. Giles loses Buffy's trust when he gets involved in a plot along side Robin Wood to dust Spike. Buffy tells Giles "I think you've taught me everything I need to know". Ironically Giles plans to be correct in his assumption that Buffy kept Spike around for personal reasons. Giles participated in the final battle at the Hellmouth and survived. |
