The worst nightmares of many of the characters are revealed in this episode:

Buffy: Being buried alive; being blamed for her parents' divorce and losing her father's affection; becoming a vampire.
Giles: Losing his ability to read; getting lost in the library stacks; Buffy being killed while he is her Watcher.
Xander: Murderous clowns wielding knives; showing up to class wearing only his underwear.
Cordelia: Having terrible hair and having to join chess club.
Willow: Having to sing opera without being able to sing or even knowing the words;

Buffy doesn't get to see her father very often, but she loves him very much and is always eager to see him.
Buffy has a dream in which she faces the Master and he stuns her with his powerfully seductive gaze. She wakes just before he bites her.

Buffy's dreams are prophetic, right...?

When Giles, Xander and Willow are in the library and realize that there is a curse that is making nightmares reality, Xander (wearing his gym clothes to cover up after the curse took the outfit he was wearing) says, "Well, um....[tugs on the collar of his shirt] We have to stop it!"
Xander stands up to the frightening clown, punches him in the face and exclaims that he was terrible and made bad balloon animals.
Buffy as a vampire - just too weird not to be intriguing!

Willow's parents "don't even bicker.. sometimes they glare."
Buffy's father's name is Hank Summers
Willow has a Nerf Herder sticker in her locker. Nerf Herder being the band that wrote the theme song for the series.
Buffy's tombstone in this episode says she was born in 1981. This is in contradiction to the two birthdates (1979 and 1980) given in "I, Robot... You, Jane."
