Giles expresses his belief that British culture is superior to American culture: "[Emily Dickinson] is a good poet for.... an American."
In the cafeteria, Buffy bests Cordelia in vying for Owen's affections. This is the start of a rivalry between the "teen queen" Cordy and the apparent social outcast Buffy.

This is the first episode in which Xander and Willow actually meet Angel.
Giles reveals that, prior to knowing his calling as a Watcher, he aspired to be a fighter pilot... or a grocer.
